Darwin first studied medicine at Edinburgh. It soon became apparent to Charles, that he was not cut out for a medical career, so he transferred to Cambridge in 1828 to study for the ministry. It was here at Cambridge that Darwin became a friend of the biology professor John Stevens Henslow and shifted his interest to zoology and then later to geography. It was Professor John Henslow of biology and Professor Adam Sedgwick of geology that provided the final fuel for Darwin's conversion to become a evolutionary naturalist. Professor Henslow was the person that arranged the invitation for Charles Darwin to go aboard the HMS Beagle. The expedition to the Pacific coast of South America started on December 31, 1831 and lasted five years. Darwin is considered the first evolutionary biologist or naturalist. Charles primary concept was of natural selection. His principal works are: The Origin of the Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859) and The Descent of Man (1871). Most of Darwin's works were attacked, but Charles relentlessly defended them. Charles Darwin continued to publish works on evolutionary biology throughout his life. Charles lived fifteen miles from London with his wife and children in the village of Downe. Charles Darwin suffered from panic disorder and Chagas' disease contracted during his travels in South America. Darwin suffered with fatigue and intestinal sickness for the rest of his life. He died on 19 April, 1882, and was buried in Westminster Abbey. This bust of Charles Darwin represents the theory
of evolution.
